Feature and Follow Friday! (#1)

*Fun blog hop feature hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read*

Q: Activity! Who is your to-die-for book crush? What do you think they look like? Add an image to make us all happy.

One of my current to-die-for book crushes is Tristan Archer from (The Archers of Avalon Trilogy by: Chelsea Fine) When I was reading this series I kept thinking of Jensen Ackles because he has the most beautiful green eyes and so does Tristan! But more than that I'm a huge Supernatural fan and to me Jensen's character Dean Winchester is a lot like him especially with both being labeled "hunters" of sorts. Another ironic fact is that Jensen plays a genetic twin experiment in an older TV series called Dark Angel. So once again this made me think of Tristan Archer because he's also an identical twin himself :) Overall Tristan is the complete dark avenger, broody, strong, intelligent and a hot rebel with a killer instinct. He can wield weapons like a pro. Do you not see how I might connect Tristan Archer with Jensen Ackles? Tristan Archer is pure fire! ;)

This is my first blog hop ever and I hope to continue this weekly meme!

My Review:

Tempted by Evil grabbed my attention immediately. It's well written, mystifying, a little dark, and has a touch of romance. Aspen is the main character; she's a little naive, sarcastic, and at times shy which creates fascinating characteristics. She is sheltered from the ways of the world because she was raised by nuns in a convent her entire life. Upon turning eighteen she decides to make a break for it and leave all that she's ever known behind. Believing all will be provided she fatefully meets a strange boy named Julian who teaches her how to have fun and provides a place for her to stay. Julian is flawless, gentlemanly, wealthy, and incredibly understanding - the perfect male specimen. That's when strange things start to occur, explicable events begin pushing Aspen to make impossible decisions that war with her very nature.

Then there's Merrick who keeps appearing out of nowhere following Aspen around, piquing her interest in him ever more. At times I felt Aspen acted very childish but as the story continues to progress you start to understand why that is and it lays the groundwork for a really cool concept. She is very out of place in society and even more than she realizes especially when strangers keep coming up to her ranting about a crazy prophecy.  Tempted by Evil snowballs from a simple story into that of a more complicated one. The suspense will drive you crazy because soo many events unfold and it's only towards the end you get a good glimpse of how everything fits together and makes sense. I enjoyed the plot building greatly!

Aspen's perspective is engrossing, she has a dark past and an even darker future. The story is creatively cultivated and entertaining. Julian is sexy and interesting to say the least! & Merrick, I want to know more about him! Is there a love-triangle in TBE's future?! It would sure seem that way - a lot of speculating and suspense, great writing; this book was a surprisingly satisfying read. Definitely a fantastic start to a new YA series.

Though seemingly predictable you'll find everything is not what it seems. You are left with a nail biting cliffhanger that will make you immediately want the next book in the light and shadow trilogy. Another thing I liked is the use of classic literature references within the story; such as comparisons between Pride and Prejudice, and Romeo and Juliet. These literary mentions were subtle and well integrated which adds some fun elements of relatability. Overall I found myself reading the entire book in one sitting (approximately 6-7 hours) straight to finish it. That said, I think it's safe to say this was a very good read and my time was in no way wasted! Shannon Morton and Amber Lynn Natusch's writing is clever and makes for a guaranteed fun reading experience. I can't wait to grab the next installment as I'm looking forward to reading how everything will play out!

SYNOPSIS:
A sheltered girl.
The perfect boy.
A mysterious stranger.
Random messages delivering a sobering prophecy plague Aspen's existence. With every curious encounter, her sanity wavers further. Before long, Aspen finds herself balancing the fate of humanity on her shoulders, until a single act turns her world upside down. She finds herself alone, isolated from those she thought she could trust.

(The Forbidden Trilogy #1-3)

WELCOME TO MY TOUR STOP!!

By: Kimberly Kinrade
 Release Date: November 26th, 2012
Genre(s): YA Fantasy/Romance

Overall Review: (5/5 stars*)

The Forbidden Trilogy is exceptionally versed. The story is pure creativity and so unlike anything I've ever read - it has everything; you name it this trilogy has it!

The Forbidden Trilogy Omnibus Edition has a lot of amazing extra content such as in depth questions brought up about each book, TOP SECRET: IPI Paranormal Profiles on everyone which is super neat. Also there are some character interviews done by Brad. Another great feature is Kimberly Kinrade's interview Q&A style about the entire series, her answers are so interesting and she tells how she has even more projects in the works revolving around the Forbidden world; which is absolutely exciting. She includes musical playlists for each book with some great song inspirations. If you love this series as much I do you'll want to get this edition because it's incredible and the extras are really a great addition and it has all three books in one!

 Forbidden Mind

(Forbidden Trilogy, #1)

My Review: (4/5 stars*)

The Forbidden Mind is a journey of love, action, and suspense. Alternating between Sam and Drake's views you get to see their perspectives and how their paths intertwine. Although reminiscent of X-Men the Forbidden Mind carves out its own rightful place in fantasy with its unique qualities. Sam has the power to read people's minds and her ability develops throughout the entire book and it's really fun to see her progression. At first I was a little wary of Sam because she didn't seem to have much of a backbone but as things start to move along she starts holding her own. & Let me just say I love strong female heroines, and the way things shape up in this book she's well on her way to becoming one.

Then there's Drake.. a spicy hot surfer boy who also has an enviable ability..or a few. His power is the ability to control minds and the additional power of superhuman strength. What a sexy combination of gifts - get anyone to do whatever you want and then lift up a car for fun, yeah - awesome. That's what I imagine his life is like...at least up until you read about his past which is some seriously dark sh**. I kept holding my breath while reading because there are a lot of I-can't-believe-that-actually-happened-oh-my-god moments. LOVED how Sam and Drake team up and become a force to be reckoned with; they're totally complimentary of each other in so many ways.

Another thing I liked was the modern world aspect with special facilities that houses people with para-powers. The facility called Rent-A-Kid has a campus, medical building, shops, cafes etc. It's almost like a Dystopian novel within the fantasy genre, it does such a great job of blending these elements seamlessly together. Pretty much like a world within a world and it's soo cool.

There are a couple of intense scenes that might make you cringe at the violence of it so BEWARE. Some topics mentioned are child pornography, abuse along with other dark subject matter. This series is YA but it's probably more suitable for ages 16+. However, it's very compelling and twists into an unexpected and very interesting plot. Forbidden Mind lures you into its web of espionage and super wicked para-powers. It's different, imaginative and suspensefully thrilling. Usually I have a great sense for finding good books and then I came across the Forbidden Trilogy...and I wish I had discovered it SO MUCH sooner. I enjoyed this first book A LOT. Kimberly Kinrade proves that she can turn a clichéd super-power story into something different and darkly entertaining! Everyone should pick up this series because a.) you won't be able to put it down, and b.) because I've read best-sellers that aren't even in Forbidden Mind's league!

My ONLY real issue is I'm not really in love with the covers, they look good but they're not really befitting of the Forbidden Trilogy. I'd love to see Sam or Drake on the cover and I don't, but other than that minor detail the contents of the book are extraordinarily amazing and speaks for itself.
Goodreads Synopsis:
She reads minds.
He controls minds.
Together, they might get out alive.
49% of Americans believe their government officials are honest.
I don't know these officials, or their supporters, but I know their secrets, and 49% of Americans are wrong. My employers pay me well to be right, to know things others can't. But I don't know why they brought that boy in, strapped to a stretcher, barely conscious. He asked me for help when I could give none. I'm a wealthy spy, a talented artist, a martial arts black belt, and a prisoner. They tell me that on my eighteenth birthday, I will be released, free to go to the college of my dreams. It's my eighteenth birthday, and a man in black is at my door. I know he's not here to free me. I know, because I can read minds. My name is Sam, and this is my story.

Forbidden Fire

 (Forbidden Trilogy, #2)

My Review: (5/5 stars*)

Forbidden Fire immerses you again in the the world of para-powered people with the thrilling continuation of Sam and Drake's story. Now in hiding and on the run from Rent-A-Kid agents these two have a lot more at stake which makes reading this book essential! This sequel will give you chills because of how ridiculously good it is. You get glimpses into Sam's past which really adds an extra layer of understanding to her character. You also get the additional POV from Lucy which is different and fun because she's got a lot going on in lock-down at the Rent-A-Kid facility and you get to know her character better and come to appreciate her role more. Lucy's viewpoint becomes more intriguing as her own lie-detector abilities manifest in new and unique ways not yet seen before in Forbidden Mind.

But perhaps the best development of the entire story is how everyone's para-powers advance and turn into something different and unexpected. Forbidden Fire has real character depth and many plot layers unfolding throughout the story. There are plenty of moments that will take you by surprise; unpredictability is a fantastic asset Forbidden Fire utilizes to the fullest which is amazingly refreshing. I really like the new villain that's unveiled; a very formidable and evil enemy. I found myself questioning good and evil and that's basically what this book explores; it incorporates the morality of what defines right and wrong. & You finally get some insight into why Drake was never taken to Rent-A-Kid when he was younger and who Sam's real family is which is such an insane revelation! Forbidden Fire kicks up the gore and amplifies the cruelty making some scenes hard to read but nevertheless gripping in a twisted sort of way.

If the story were a puzzle all the pieces would be different and yet they would still be connected to the same picture. Forbidden Fire is fiery, both figuratively and literally. It's well written and has you feeling a giant array of emotions. Incredibly good would be an understatement. The first book Forbidden Mind was a great read but this book takes everything to a whole other level - one which raises the bar even higher. It's a must read for anyone who enjoys reading about young adults with uniquely powerful abilities, evil corporations, unpredictable twists, consistent action, romance, dark plots, gore galore, and cool characters all wrapped into one engrossing story.

I cannot wait to read the conclusion of this amazing trilogy, I'm just SO impressed with everything that's happened thus far. It's so deliciously dark and captivating! I have nothing but great things to say about this series :).
Goodreads Synopsis:
She escaped, but she’ll never be free.
“Time held no meaning as my mind darted in and out of memories. Past and present collided to create a full-sensory collage out of my life: playing hide-n-seek with my best friends Luke—who always cheated by walking through walls when he was about to be caught—and Lucy; Mr. Caldrin critiquing my sketches and offering ideas to make them more realistic; targets changing faces, blending into the same person, their thoughts rippling through my mind like waves. Through it all, a demon stalked me from the shadows of my memories, never quite showing its face, but crouching, waiting.

And then I dreamed....”

Sam and Drake may have escaped, but they aren’t free—not with a powerful Seeker after them. As Sam struggles with the ethics of her new powers and embraces a blossoming physical relationship with Drake, Lucy and Luke face challenges of their own.

With forces coalescing inside and outside the Rent-A-Kid dorms, it’s only a matter of time before the fire they started forces each of them to make choices they can’t undo. But will it be enough to save them?

Forbidden Life

(Forbidden Trilogy, #3)

My Review: (5/5 stars*)

Forbidden Life is the longest read in the trilogy and in my own opinion the best! The story was like a giant roller coaster that crept up a steep hill and even though you knew the end was coming you still won't be entirely ready for it. It will consume your mind with its many layers and intricate plot. The plot thickens with every chapter and the suspense just keeps building. The action in this book just never ceases and you'll be racing through to find out what's going to happen next. Forbidden Life picks up 3 months after Forbidden Fire left off. Every character has there own struggles to overcome and numerous obstacles to face. That in and of itself is brilliant because just when you think everything's going to be okay an unknown variable changes everything. You get to see tons of Lucy which is fantastic - she's so strong, independent, and fierce. Her perspective is incredibly entertaining and full of surprises. She really becomes her own character and as much as it is Sam's story it's also Lucys as well. Forbidden Life never has a single predictable moment and that's what makes this whole series standout in a sea of other YA novels. This book is also my favorite of the entire trilogy though I did say that about the last one Forbidden Fire, it just went beyond everything; surpassing greatness for excellence. COMPLETELY LOVED IT.

Drake's a hot mess having left Sam you get to see where he ends up. Sam's baby is born and her life just keeps spiraling out of control. Lucy and Luke get into a very entertaining situation. There are a few added perspectives from other minor characters which is fascinating insight to glimpse there own views. One of my favorite things about this book is how Sam finally becomes a confident badass. She isn't playing games with anyone anymore especially when they interfere with her mission of protecting her family. She'll do anything to keep them safe. Yet again Sam and her friends are at war to take down once and for all the leader behind Rent-A-Kid; her father. New characters are introduced that are really cool and extremely likeable such as Agent Hunter Riley who has a growing romance with Lucy - he's completely delicious, and his personality is magnificent. He also has some interesting secrets of his own. Then there's Toby - a street kid who has some really funny banter with Drake. The villains of this book are even more insidious, with twisted agendas of there own. There are some really cool science fiction moments integrated into the series blending together fantasy, paranormal, and dystopian elements that make it something entirely new.

Like the previous books this one also has its dark moments however not as morbid as the others. I didn't mind the violence as much because the story captivated all else. The characters in this book are expansive and you see everyone more and there para-powers evolve and there's a lot of evolutionary factors that explain how these powers came about. A lot is concluded in Forbidden Life so not once did I feel like it didn't have an acceptable ending or an unrequited resolution. The only small issue I had was that up until halfway through Luke was seriously irritating me with his attitude. Intentional or not that got to me. In the 2 previous books he's portrayed as fun, cute, and strong. In the first half of Forbidden Life he's made out to be a giant complainer, weak, and annoying. I tried really hard to overlook this but every time I did he would do something that would make me angrier. I don't like whiny characters but thankfully he got back on track and the second half of the book made my thoughts on this matter disappear; I was SO enthused he was able to redeem himself. Although I felt this way it made his character growth development more intriguing as all the characters individually had a lot of soul searching to do.
Overall it was overwhelmingly fantastic and is now one of my newest favorite trilogies.

I really want to read more about this world Kimberly Kinrade created and I cannot wait to get my hands on her future works!
Goodreads Synopsis:
The road to redemption begins in darkness.
A sinister force waits for them in darkness, ready to devour their powers and take their lives.
Sam's baby is the key to a lock that must never be opened. To keep her child safe, Sam will do anything.
Drake might have found a way to get his powers back and save his family, at what cost?
Luke and Lucy uncover secrets in an organization they thought they could trust, and the lives of all Rent-A-Kid children are at stake.
In this last Forbidden Trilogy installment, the secrets to Rent-A-Kid will finally be revealed.

Twist (Review)

(Mageri, #2)

Release Date: February 26th, 2012
Genre(s): Adult Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance

My Review: (5/5 stars*)

I absolutely loved the first book Sterling in the Mageri Series. The world was so compelling and mysterious it sucked me right in. It was no shock that this book Twist (Mageri Series #2) delivered even more than the first (not to take away from my initial opinion of the first book) but this book was even better! I really enjoyed the new characters introduced and Silver's new love interest. Also the expansion of the world Dannika Dark created is absolutely fascinating as are the new supernatural creatures. This series so far is just really amazing and I can't recommend it enough. It's diverse and magical and separates itself from other books in the YA/UF genre which is a great accomplishment.

SYNOPSIS OF STERLING (MAGERI, #1):

Silver was human - once. Zoë Merrick was attacked one night while walking home from a night out. A mysterious stranger murdered her and left her for dead, she awakens to find herself in a body bag covered in her own blood. Revealing as little as possible Zoe awakens from in and out of consciousness days later to find herself not quite the way she remembers. Her features are all different, she's taller, her face is flawless, her eyes are entirely a different color, and her body is more fit. Somehow she's transformed, and in more ways than one. Forced into a world she doesn't understand she seeks answers and is overwhelmed when she finds out what she's become and what it means.

SYNOPSIS OF TWIST (MAGERI, #2):

Silver is back in the second installment of the Mageri Series. Ready to live a normal life in her new town of Cognito after leaving her old life behind to learn more about her mage abilities and her peoples government structure she doesn't expect what happens next - or the fact that a familiar mage who stole her light is still out there gunning to get her unique power for himself. At whatever the cost. Unexpected twists leads Silver to create an alliance with the most unexpected ally leading her to face truths she'd rather not. It's a race against time to see who will find who first before Silver's coveted abilities become exploited and she becomes an even bigger target.

Why I Love Young-Adult Books

Why I love Young-Adult books:

Why do I love YA? Because I relate completely with young adults, and YA books are always emotionally satisfying. I find myself in a lot of similar situations as some of the characters written about in these particular books (seeing as I'm only 19). Aside from that young adult books express a lot of creative storylines and incorporates the aspect of having fun and usually you can get lost in an exciting world of fantasy in YA more so than in adult or other genre books. YA gives me escapism from my run of the mill life and lets my mind wander on an adventure that eludes in reality. It gives me a break that sometimes I really need and that's the ultimate reason for loving young adult books.

Some of my favorite YA reads include: My Merlin series by: Priya Ardis, the Archers of Avalon Trilogy by: Chelsea Fine, the Significance series by: Shelly Crane, Star-Crossed series by: Rachel Higginson, and Penryn & The End of Days series by: Susan Ee. Each of these authors inspire me with there creative minds and unique stories. The genre of YA I especially love reading is Paranormal/Romance, Urban Fantasy, Dystopian, Science Fiction, and Contemporary works. Fiction is my favorite because it's created from your imagination: anything you can possibly think of weaved into a story that allows your thoughts to run wild. Non-fiction is too close to reality and I like to take mental vacations from real life sometimes and this is why I find myself with a YA book because it includes every incredible thing in a realm where impossibility can happen. Sometimes you think to yourself "I wish life were like that", or "I wish that would really happen". "Wouldn't that be cool?". That's what YA does for me.

Why do YOU love YA? Comment below and also enter to win some awesome books!!

Mortal Obligation (Mini-Review)

Mortal Obligation

(Dark Betrayal Trilogy, #1)

Release Date: July 29th, 2011
Genre(s): YA Paranormal/Fantasy

My Review: (4/5 stars*)

Mortal Obligation is fun, free, and simply fantastic. I devoured this book extremely quick. The characters are very likeable, and the plot itself intriguing. It had just a little bit of everything and has a refreshingly cool concept. Immortals/mortals with unique abilities, an intertwined story involving gods, just enough action, some mystery, and a dash of romance - what's not to love. The only negative thing I could find about this book is that it didn't have as much action as I would have preferred but overall a nice contribution to YA and PR. I'm greatly looking forward to the characters and story development in Mortal Defiance (Dark Betrayal Trilogy, #2).

SYNOPSIS:

Ree McKenna is a seventeen year old high school student hopelessly crushing on her brother's best friend. Before her brother's untimely death he made his best friend promise to look after Ree - like a sister. Seemingly ordinary Ree starts feeling the pressure of her past and present weighing her down. One night her life changes when her and her circle of friends get involved in an incident that changes all of there lives forever. Ree learns of her and her friends importance in a battle that has lasted many years and that the gods have chosen her to be the one to win the last. Mortal Ree and her friends must now face the reality of being human kind's only savior from the darkness that threatens the Earth; but at what cost?

My Link In Time (Review)

(The Immortal Ones, #2)

Release Date: March 24th, 2011
Genre(s): YA Paranormal/Fantasy/Romance

My Review: (4.5/5 stars*)

I'm going to be completely honest the first book A Chance for Charity in the Immortal Ones series didn't do it for me. I felt like it was too slow and lacked the necessary elements of an interesting story. However, My Link in Time surprised me in the absolute best way whereas with A Chance for Charity I didn't want to pick it back up immediately but with My Link in Time I refused to put it down. I feel like S.L. Baum figured out the missing link to making this an excellent story, no pun intended. A truly engrossing read. Action, suspense, and mystery held it all together, just as I had pegged Charity's character the author decided to make her even more layered with an even bigger twist of fate. Although less romance I loved the back stories of other characters that integrated itself to show different character's perspectives and pasts. Fantastic book. I loved it. Truly unique from other reads, the story stuck with me and compelled me to write up a worthy review. I can't wait to read the next book in the series: Our Summer of Discontent (The Immortal Ones, #3).

SYNOPSIS:
Charity returns in the sequel My Link in Time newly engaged to Lincoln. Together they plan to have a small wedding in Las Vegas, no problem. Only now Lincoln has a taste for blood. No issue there. Charity invites a few of her friends who just happen to be immortals and witches to her nuptials. That's completely normal. Then Charity's mortal friends end up complicating things for her. Small problem. But when an old witch friend of Catherine's shows up things get strange and Charity's happily-ever-after is abruptly postponed.

The Awakening (Mini-Review)

(Darkest Powers, #2)

Release Date: April 28th, 2009
Genre(s): YA Fantasy/Paranormal
My Review: (4/5 stars*)

The Awakening was a lot better than The Summoning by bounds. A solid 4 star rating. What The Summoning failed at The Awakening accomplished; lot's of action and suspense. Picks up right where The Summoning left off, Chloe's trapped and on the run. The character's have a lot more depth and growth going on in this book making it even more entertaining. Though a pretty easy and quick read just like the previous book this one tends to be more memorable and enjoyable than the last. A fun read that will have you racing through it to find out what happens next.

SYNOPSIS:
Chloe Saunders and her friends had a plan. Don't get caught. But Chloe does exactly that and now she's trapped at the mercy of an experimental organization called The Edison Group. Now the stakes are even higher for escaping and everything she thought she knew about her life was a lie. Betrayed she turns to the most unlikely of allies to make it out alive and help her supernatural friends find Simon and Derek's father - the only one they believe can help them out of this mess.

The Summoning (Mini-Review)

(Darkest Powers, #1)

Release Date: July 1st, 2008
Genre(s): YA Paranormal/Fantasy

My Review: (3.5/5 stars*)

The Summoning is a really compelling read. The beginning is very intriguing and mysteriously creepy. Chloe Saunders the main character of the story is a little naive, immature, yet logical. Her power is interesting but you rarely see much of it. The book as a whole held my attention and it took me less than 6 hours to read. Overall I enjoyed it but it lacked consistent action. The beginning and end were the best parts. Although simple the Summoning made for an enjoyable read and will leave you wanting more.

SYNOPSIS:

Chloe Saunders is a perfectly average fifteen-year-old until she sees a dead person. Nobody believes her when she runs through her private art school screaming bloody murder to get it away from her. That's how she ends up at a home for teenagers with issues. Everything appears normal as she falls into a routine-until she starts questioning strange things around Lyle House. How long will she be locked away here? What exactly is wrong with her housemates that they ended up in this place? The answers are even more strange and frightening than she could have imagined. Old secrets loom beneath Lyle House, and Chloe starts to realize maybe her being sent there wasn't a coincidence.

Eternal Kiss of Darkness (Review)

(Night Huntress World, #2)

Release Date: July 27th, 2010

Genre(s):  Adult Paranormal Romance

My Review: (5/5 stars*)

Eternal Kiss of Darkness is very addicting. Switching between Mencheres' p.o.v. and Kira's it tells both their stories. Initially I refused to purchase this book because I didn't really care for Mencheres because he's portrayed as intimidating and heartless in the Night Huntress series. But I fear I've misjudged this book immensely and Mencheres' story - which was unfair because it was absolutely fantastic. Within reading the first couple chapters maybe even before then I was immediately drawn into the story. A lot like Cat's tale Kira doesn't accept Mencheres or her feelings towards him right away. She's an independently strong woman whose job description is to save lives as a P.I.. His job description on the other hand is to take lives. But they have one thing in common - they both have dark pasts. Opposites attract in this excitingly thrilling book. Delivering the perfect blend of action, intrigue, and romance. Jeaniene Frost is a very talented writer; this book is downright alluring. Mencheres is a sexy Egyptian master vampire whose backstory is absolutely fascinating and totally worth unveiling! I also enjoyed the appearances of Vlad Tepesh, Bones, and Cat; it adds a layer of understanding to his friendships from his own perspective.
